Lonesome Dove Equestrian Center provides year-round therapeutic horseback riding exclusively for veterans with special needs and disabilities. Focusing on Veterans in Central Virginia, the goal of this program is to improve the quality of life for the participants through activities that are positive to their cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being.

Our program is unique in that it is provided to the veterans at absolutely NO COST to them or their families.  LDEC receives no Government funds and depends entirely on private donations and fundraising efforts. Founded in January 2008, the program started with just 3 riders. To date, provided over 1,450 rides to veterans who range in age from the early twenties to our oldest current rider who will celebrate his 96th birthday this year.

We serve Veterans who have served our country in every conflict from WW II to the war against terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan and they have a variety of disabilities such as amputations, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and traumatic brain injury.
